Signage for Artisans, Retailers and Producers in New York State
|
New York State's official Tourist Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) are seen along many roadways. For those businesses within the Adirondack and Catskill Park boundary lines, the signs are brown and yellow, and for those outside of the park boundary lines, they are blue and white. TODS are available from the NYS Department of Transportation for businesses within five miles of a Scenic Byway and on "non-primary" routes.
TODS may advertise the services, activities, arts, crafts or products that are commonly accepted to be of special interest to travelers and which are specifically related to the Scenic Byway theme. Other businesses which qualify for TODs include: natural phenomena, historical and cultural venues, scientific, educational and religious sites, campsites, lodging, eateries and vehicle services and repairs.
The business is limited to two lines of text on a background, unless they have a federally registered trademark. The current annual fee of $50, which is limited to the initial sign (in each direction), is payable once DOT has approved the business sign application. If a business has a sign facing both directions the maximum fee is $100 annually no matter how many followup (trailblazer) signs are required.
The applicant is responsible for all costs associated with manufacture and installation of the signs (although in many regions, DOT prefers to have the installation done by its own staff), and the signs must be made according to the specification sheets. Sign specifications for TOD signage (page 26/section 3.13. of the NYS Scenic Byways Sign Manual) are provided to the business after the application has been accepted.
Any business can contact ANCA for guidance or to request a hard copy of the NYS Scenic Byways Sign Manual. The online version at 20 mgs is rather big for downloading.
Businesses can request the application by calling the DOT Region Real Estate Department staff which represents the county their business is located in:
