We did extremely well at the Adirondack Living show in Saratoga over Easter weekend. We will be at the Lake Placid show by the same promoter July 18-20. He is already nearly filled up for the Saratoga show next year - this is probably the best retail show we have ever done. Might be of interest to some others. Promoter is Jeff Frasier 518-371-6363. Nadia to Ralph,
So basically, if you go to another state to sell directly to the public, you should get a sales tax ID # for that state and report the amount. There must be a minimum. In NYS it's $600 I think. Did you find one website to apply to all states or did you need to go to each state website? Thank goodness at least most of this paperwork can be done online. It would be nice to find one website that lists the sales tax amount of each state with link to where to get form and what is minimum. Enjoy the next few days of heat and sun.
Ralph to Nadia,
Both Virginia and North Carolina require a tax ID number to be an itinerant peddler there. Both have web sites that allow either on line registration or downloaded applications. Virginia allows on line tax payment. I am not aware of any yearly minimum. Gross sales and taxable sales are reported on a ST-8 for Virginia and a E500-A for North Carolina. Both are simple, preprinted forms susequently mailed by the respective state Dept. of Revenue. I assume that they will continue to arrive periodically. I also assume that if the form is not returned the tax ID is simply terminated (like NY).-- I'll probably return the forms to keep up the ID.
I think that there have been conferences between many of the states to standardize the procedure and forms (to increase revenue). Many out of state peddlers don't comply simply because the process is a nuisance - the 7 1/2 percent of claimed sales does not usually amount to a lot.
I figured I'd go with the process. The odds of some one checking ID's is pretty low but I don't consider myself particularly lucky.
Regards, Ralph

...The ad for (the) Adirondack (North Country Crafts of NY). As you can see we added "of NY" to the title, for the artists felt many would not know where (the) Adirondacks is... Thought you would like a copy thus far and will mail one to you. Bulk mailing goes out July 3rd.
(Nadia's comments: This directory, some 18 years old, goes out to 20,000 w/s buyers across the nation twice a year. Rusticwood.com, Northwoods Field Guide and Art Baird Pottery are running a group ad in the issue just being mailed out. I'll ask them how many orders they got and let you know for the next issue. Rates are much cheaper if you go in a group from $400 some down to low $200s. And Barbara does a really nice job of getting everybody on board.)

(email discussion between Jeff and Nadia)
To Jeff from Nadia,
The Painted Bird is from CT. The show application says that 25% of the vendors can come from outside of the area.
This was happening anyways so we finally acknowledged this in the eligibility clause. With the show beginning to attract more buyers, vendors from outside of the area who hear about it via word of mouth are also beginning to sign up. Even with the complementary "How to do w/s" workshop which has been taken by some 120 craft businesses over the last 3 years with some resulting 50 becoming Buyer Day vendors and the annual application mailing to 1000 artisans within the 14 county area, the show has not been able to grow on only vendors from the area.
My vision for this show is that some 135 vendors come to the show with some 350 to 400 buyers with the theme of nature and rustic and having the artisans there (no reps) giving it a unique draw. A natural place to draw buyers is from VT, NH and ME where rustic and nature sells well.
What are your thoughts on this?
(Jeff's reply)
Hi Nadia,
When we started out, all vendors had to be from the 14 County area of ANCA coverage, thereby promoting " Adirondack" business. I understood that while a majority of my goods and raw materials had to come from this area or be made in this area, a certain percentage of goods we sell could come from outside the area. But this rule applied to ANCA area businesses. I get the impression this was bastardized to mean a percentage of "businesses" could be from outside the area in order to "grow" the show. I am very disappointed to see this change take place. While growth of shows can be a good thing, it shouldn't be at the expense of local business. Was ANCA under pressure by higher-ups to make the show profitable to ANCA so that ANCA could justify the expense?( requiring more vendors than were available from the ANCA area) Does ANCA rely on funding from NYS? If so, Does NYS realize that it is promoting business from other states? Does ANCA get funding from the surrounding states and does this obligate ANCA to include those states vendors?
(Nadia answering questions - ANCA receives no funding for Buyer Days. The income generated from registration fees covers all show expenses. I also want to thank Jeff for the clarification on definition of business - his definition does fit with ANCA's Adirondack North Country Product Logo requirements so it was probably the original definition. I had not been made aware of this definition - I think ANCA has hoped the show would become a for profit business run by someone like me and thus has pretty much let me have free rein.)
I have always spoken very highly of ANCA. It was instrumental in helping our business to get to where it is today. I have always tried to direct new business to contact ANCA for the same help and results. Part of that pride was that there were local people trying to help local people, through NYS tax dollars. When buyers attended the show, they could be assured that the vendors were truly"Adirondack". I'm sorry that I haven't kept abreast of ANCA policy for I would have written when this was changed.
Anyway, thank you for letting me get my concerns out to you.
Jeff

(Response from Nadia to inquiry from Scott on how the chances looked for group booth at Feb. 2004 Western New York Gift Show )
Hi Scott,
Still waiting on grant notice but Jane Desotelle, Carol Clarridge - the maple syrup woman and Connie Cassavaugh went and they plan on going back (to Western New York Gift Show) again. One picked up 13 new accounts, another a big one and the other did about $3000 in orders. They put themselves close to North Country Books and an Adk rep (aisle 500). The woman (Joann) who manages the show worked with them on location and they split booth spaces. Let one of them know you're interested - that way no matter what you're in and you won't have to pay the full booth fee of 500 and 100 show fee.
(Follow up to email) the grant was actually submitted June 9. The grant, among other things, would pay for one time costs of booth materials for group booth of Adirondack North Country Products - so any recommendations on lightweight, easily changeable, reasonable priced booth display products and lighting is appreciated. Could hear about grant acceptance sometime this month. Whatever is sent in as recommendations for booth materials and lighting I will post in next email so we can all consider them. So far what Connie Cassavaugh, Snowshoe Publishing and Ralph and Joe, Pennyfield Studio, had at Buyer Days is the best I've seen. Pictures at www.adknccrafts.com/buyerdayslist.com.)

Have a tourism based biz and looking for some financing and been turned down by your bank because you're missing just one piece out of the 4-5 they like to see? Well, this $3 million (increasing to 10 million within weeks) dollar loan fund partnered by Adirondack Bank and AEDC might be of interest. These loan monies are dedicated towards tourism biz like accommodations, restaurants, etc. They did not mention retail shops or studios at their press conference on 7.10.03 but most of you certainly are tourism based businesses.
So this is one stop shopping for technical assistance and loan. They've worked with 4 or 5 lodgings and restaurants so far. AEDC has been in the biz of small business loan assistance for 18 years. If you approach them, let us know how it goes. There's no minimun loan requirement. They'll be making case by case decisions.
