Opening March 27 and running through April 30, 2004, the Lake George Arts Project’s Courthouse Gallery will present “Manuscript”, a solo exhibition of recent work by Marc Sapir. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, March 27, from 4 - 6 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.

Sapir’s paintings represent a tension between logos—text, science, digital technology—and the artist’s intuitive aesthetic manipulation (coloring, layering, recombining) of original found images.

==================

Advance Notice - Nationally known watercolor artist to present 2 day workshop at forARTSake in Malone on Sat./Sun., Oct. 23-24, 2004. Kathie George is an innovative artist who loves working with a variety of media. Known for her friendly, informative and energectic approach to teaching, Kathie has been a sought after instructor for over 20 years. Her award winning work is included in many corporate and private collections. Kathie has authored four watercor books and her work has been highlighted in numerous national magazines and art instructor books. In April, 2000 Kathie's batik work was featured in American Artist magazine.

Workshop - Batik on Rice Paper is Kathie's signature technique. Injet some excitement into your work. Turn tired subject matter into interesting, out of ordinary work. This is a process of layering wax and color onto textured rice paper. The result is fantastic.

SunFeather Natural Soap Presented to Oprah Winfrey for 50th Birthday (Potsdam, N.Y) - - Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 50th birthday live on television this afternoon and a local north country company is honored to have been part of the festivities. An order of Sixty large bricks of all natural soap, custom designed and embossed with the name of Oprah’s new California home, was filled by Potsdam-based SunFeather Natural Soap Company. The company is a leader in the production of all-natural soaps, shampoo bars, bug repellents and other care products. The Adirondack Artists' Guild is proud to announce a new member on their roster of year round regional artists. Donna Foley is now showing her rich wool tapestries at the Guild Art Gallery. Donna explores color and texture by combining lustrous sheep wool with natural dyes from plants. The wool is then handspun and woven into tapestries and rugs. In her work, Donna strives to capture the rhythms and colors, both subtle and bold, of the natural world. Donna joins the group of ten member artists whose work is on display and for sale seven days a week in a very unique gallery space at 77 Main Street in Saranac Lake.

From: Nadia Korths, Western New York Gift Show (Feb. 15-18/Rochester) Group Booth Coordinator

To Group Booth Participants and Terry Martino, Executive Director, ANCA

Date: 3.05.04

Western New York Gift Show - Summary Report (lst 2 paragraphs)

The Western New York Gift Show Group Booth generated $8500 in orders and $700 in sample sales, about 5 times the cost of the booth fee. This was a first time program, initiated by Nadia Korths, ANCA’s craft programs coordinator, and a number of vendors who already attend this show. Applications mailed to some 1300 vendors resulted in 17 vendors signing up - enough to cover the 30’ by 8’ booth fee ($1625), some of the coordinator’s time ($800) and electricity and postcard mailing ($180).

It is recommended that a group booth at the WNY Gift Show become an annual marketing program. To take advantage of already established buyer traffic, the booth was located next to other Adirondack North Country vendors who had been there 4 or 5 years. Almost $8,000 in orders were for product which retailed for less than $10 and which could fit easily in small mom and pop country theme shops. Though our section did well, overall, the show’s attendance numbers are flat because of the economy and the exhibiting of imports and large manufacturing companies. 3 other vendors (booth size 10x10) with somewhat similar product took in $7,000 to $8,000 in orders. Postcards were mailed to some 500 shops and the ad in the directory did draw buyers to the booth.

Hi Nadia,

Ok, first Sampling is GREAT! That is what they would like. The idea is emphasis on promotion and selling is secondary. I think the option or opportunity for selling is to "make it worth the vendors while" also we know that people are going to want some of the things they sample. I have spoken with each of the vendors who are on my list, and I have explained that the emphasis is on promotion and an opportunity to 'show' the local goverment, community development and state officials the wide variety of entrepreneurship taking place in the Adirondacks, as well as celebrating our 'agricultural and craft traditions' of this area. So far each of these vendors have asked for a full table. I will have a display for Adirondack Harvest...did you want to have an ANCA/CCE/Adirondack Harvest informational display area together (which could ultimately be one or two tables for the info stuff alone)--although I want to provide as much space for the vendors as possible.

As for custom orders. If that is what the vendor does best ... I don't see the problem. I will ask regarding this. I will hopefully be able to get back to you on this by the end of the week.

Until later, Take care, Bernadette

Challenged by the prospect of developing nature themed wholesale accounts for my work, I've come up with some additional designs that I think will be well received and I'm looking forward to this opportunity.

Rustic Style as Art the Focus of Annual Show

By Linda Ellingsworth

Aficionados of museum-quality rustic art will want to mark July 10 and 12, 2004 on their calendar, when the Adirondack Rustic Arts Gallery in Schroon Lake, NY holds its 4th Annual Adirondack Rustic Expo. The 2004 show will be sponsored by Adirondack Rustics Gallery. The finest examples of rustic art being produced today by 50 of the country’s finest artisans. The popularity of the art form is evidenced by the phenomenal growth of the show in the three years.

“Attendance triples yearly say Darlene Gregson, owner of the Gallery. “Sales for both the artists and the Gallery were exceptionally strong. Sales at the Gallery prior to the Show are also strong; as collectors continue to check the Gallery for the more unique works available. They wouldn’t like to miss that perfect piece. I think people were looking forward to the Adirondack Rustic Expo.”

Cars lined Route 9 for almost a mile as people vied to speak with the artists and view their work. Many of the creations were one-of-a-kind, functional art, with their prices reflecting both the craftsmanship and their uniqueness...

In addition to Adirondack-based artists, the 2004 show will also feature the works of four prominent rustic artists from the western U.S; the collection is currently on display at the Gallery. Impressed with the quality of the work exhibited at the Western Design Conference (held at Cody, Wyoming), Darlene has signed western artists Diane Cole, John Gallis, Eric Shell and Brad & Lorraine Greenwood to exhibit at the Gallery and for this year’s show in Schroon Lake.

The Adirondack Rustic Arts Gallery has some additional sponsorship opportunities available for this year’s show. Sponsorship from local and regional upscale resorts, magazines, and news media is especially welcome. For more information on sponsorship or about the show, contact the Gallery at 518-532-0020, or log on to their website at Adirondack Rustic Arts Gallery.

More and more shows are creating online applications. And Buyer Day craftspeople certainly are using them - 11 out of the 56 or so craftspeople as of late Feb. The March issue of Crafts Report has an article on this new very practical trend. Maybe next year (no, I think I'll start right now - Marilyn and Tim - you'll be getting 2 to jury Monday), I'll have the jury process set up online.
