Korths, on ANCA's behalf, then toured Salem with Kim Shea of Tim Shea Precious Metal Designs. Shea's studio is in back of their two story Victorian. Great view across fields and river to small mountains beyond. 35 years of classic designs, excellent craftsmanship and good signage result in about a third of their jewelry sales, now about 80% repeat customers, coming directly to the studio.

Afterwards, one of Shea's neighbors, Annette Nielsen, co-chair with Bob Akland of the Al Fresco Dinners, shared her enthusiasm for the farmers of Washington County who are transitioning into the local- and/or organic-grown markets. The fourth annual 2006 Al Fresco dinner sold out to 350 people at $30 per person with all foods sourced directly from 26 local farmers and artisan producers. Tickets for the expanded weekend 2007 event go on sale June lst.

The dinner also drew a group of two dozen members of the New York City Slow Foods Chapter. They learned about the availability to small producers of the shared used Battenkill Kitchen, Inc., the weekly delivery of product to NYC and of a group of farmers and artisan producers combining forces to create a CSA, community shared agriculture, which is marketing as far north as Lake Placid via word of mouth.

After lunch at Steininger's, a cafe also known for their Belgian style chocolate making, we walked to the pharmacy (with local artisan product on display), the recently opened artist's cooperative, North Main Gallery, and the bank to admire the award winning renovation/conversion from the original residence. This village of 900 generates bank deposit totals that consistently result in Salem being in the top five branches of this 35 branch NYS bank!

As we toured the Tuscany like setting of the hills surrounding Salem, Korths learned that Gardenworks Farm now offers fresh baked breads and pastries and that the Mapleland Farms Sugarhouse has a breathtaking view towards the Green Mountains. Salem Artworks, located on 120 acres on the village outskirts, is dotted with modern sculpture works. They create huge monumental statues for municipalities and others across North America! We ended our tour coming in to the east side of the village and passed more creative enterprises; Woody Hill Farms, Different Drummer, Salem Art and Antiques and the Shelden Farm Stand who, once they open for the season, now sell local artisan cheeses and meats, as well as their own produce.
