1,000 craftspeople, retailers and service organization staff receive ANCA's news and announcements for and about the artisans and retailers of the region.
Ways of the Woods, the Northern Forest Center's Museum on Wheels Visit Ways of the Woods, the Northern Forest Center's Museum on Wheels at the: Remington Arts Festival/Traditional Arts in Upstate NY (TAUNY): Canton, NY on October: 7. This Weekend Adirondack Museum's Rustic Furniture Fair The Adirondack Museum's Rustic Furniture Fair, September 9 and 10, featuring handmade rustic furnishings by artisans from the Adirondacks and other parts of New York State and New England, along with live music, demonstrations, and seasonal foods. Hours are 10 am-5 pm Saturday, and 10 am-4 pm Sunday. Historic rustic furniture from the museum's impressive collection will also be on display. Get more information at Adirondack Museum. Vendor Spaces Still Open at Lowville Cream Cheese Festival The Lowville Cream Cheese Festival, taking place in downtown Lowville, Saturday, September 16, from 11 am to 8 pm. The day's activities include the unveiling of the world's largest cheesecake, a bagel and cream cheese eating contest, a cream cheese toss, special activities for children, and all-day music, including the Dirty Pool Blues Band from Syracuse, the Atkinson Family Band, and lots more. NCPR's Barn Heller will be MC. There's also a dance that evening at 8pm at the Lowville Fire Hall. For vendor application: www.CreamCheeseFestival.com Interpreting Wildlife Art Exhibition The Wildlife Conservation Society Adirondack Program is excited to announce an invitational wildlife art exhibition open to local artists of all ages. The show will run from October 15 – October 28th, 2006 at Bluseed Studio in Saranac Lake. On Sunday, October 15 from 4pm – 7pm, Wildlife Conservation Society will host an opening reception. At 5pm there will be wildlife themed storytelling and musical performances by local artists. The art show will be judged and the entire event is free and open to the public. The exhibition is open to all artists and media including photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, fiber, ceramics, woodcrafts, jewelry, prints, and construction. All pieces must have a wildlife theme including your personal view of wildlife, wildlife conservation, threats to wildlife, wildlife stills, nature art, etc. Any creative interpretation of wildlife is welcome. There is a $5 hanging fee for each piece and a limit of one piece per person. The first 100 pieces will be accepted on a first come basis. Pedestal space is limited. Vendors Wanted for One Day Symposium in Oswego On October 12, 2006, SUNY Oswego Center for Business and Community Development will gather women from Central and Northern New York for a one day symposium called Connections. This symposium is designed to bring women of all ages and backgrounds together to explore their entrepreneurial place and power in the arts, business world, and various fields of science. In the spirit of entrepreneurship, Connections will energize women to learn from others, generate new ideas, and move forward with their business aspirations. The cost for showcasing your products and/or services is $75. Deadline for registration is September 25, 2006. Space is limited to 20 vendors. The fee includes a 6 x 2.5 skirted table, continental breakfast, and one boxed lunch. You are welcome to attend any of the sessions. Vendors are required to staff their tables throughout the day, as the set-up is centrally located to student and attendee traffic. Additional boxed lunches are available for $25 each. Note: electricity is NOT an available option. Set-up will be between the hours of 7:00 – 8:00 AM only, on October 12. The agenda will include internationally known business coach, speaker, author, and SUNY Oswego graduate, Dr. Lois Frankel, www.drloisfrankel.com. Also on the agenda is Poet Laureate Mona Lake Jones. Dr. Jones is a writer, orator, educator and model of the African American woman on the move. With such dynamic speakers, we project 200 attendees from Oswego and surrounding areas. Buyer Days 2007 Dates The ANCA sponsored Buyer Days Trade Show is scheduled for April 4th - 5th, 2007 at the City Center. Mark your calendar. Congratulations to First Place Winner Linda Allen Linda Scherz Allen of Adirondack Basketry in Lowville, NY recently won first place in The Arts and Crafts, Basketry, Original Design Section at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY. Linda said she was delighted to find out that she had had won first place. Given that there are many talented basket weavers throughout New York, she considered it a true honor to have been awarded first place. She thanked the judges for selecting her basket for this special award. Adirondack Basketry has been in business since 1990, and was featured in the February 2006 issue of Absolutely Business, an regional business magazine. Raffle for Quilt Second Annual Quilt Show by the Elmwood Quilters of Syracuse, NY began on Sept. 2 at Scenic Outlook Studios Pottery & Gallery, in Raparius, NY. The quilts will be on display through October 1. The "Mystery Quilt" will be raffled off to benefit the Jim Marmaduke Campership Fund and will be drawn on October 1. Two Marketing Toolkit Workshops in October ANCA and WEBC/Comlinks are partnering to have a Marketing Toolkit workshop in Malone at ForARTSake on Tuesday, Oct. 5th from 5 to 7:30. Attendees exchange their own experiences while reviewing Toolkit and then critique ForARTSake, Julia's Art Glass and one other shop. Korths will present the Marketing Toolkit workshop in Glens Falls at the Adirondack Community College on Oct. 26 from 9am - 12 noon. Register with the Adirondack Community College: 518.743.2238. Harvest Festival Week in Champlain Valley and High Peaks Through September 10th through the 16th, thirty area farms and other agriculturally oriented sites will open their doors to the public for tours, product sampling and hands-on participation. Visit Cornell Cooperative Extension, pages 29 and 30, for a schedule and map of the tours. There are five farms missing from the schedule and map due to deadline constraints - please call for more information on the Elizabethtown BRASS Ramble with Dennis Kalma, the Almanzo Wilder Farm tour in Burke, Tucker Farms tour in Brighton, Plumb Hill Farm tour in Malone and Bonesteels Garden Center tour in North Bangor. For those of you not in the High Peaks - Champlain Valley region visit NY Farms to find the closest NYS Harvest Celebration. Fall Customers Look for Regionally Made When your customers ask for day trip recommendations for places to stop to buy more regionally made product, give them a copy of ANCA's Art, Crafts and Foods along Scenic Byways of the Adirondack North Country. This year's full color graphically stylized version, highlighting 40 shops and studios from across the region, has a great regional map in the center. Summer Visitor Statistics from Saratoga Race Track On-track attendance average was up slightly to 25,939 fans per day compared to 25,914 fans per day in 2005. Shows Experienced a Downward Trend in 2005 The economy — both on a national and a local level — can also play a factor in the temporary success of a show, particularly in the North and Upper Midwest, where shows experienced a downward trend in 2005. In fact, the whole circuit was down last year, according to most exhibitors and promoters. So to make this year’s list, most shows had to figure out a way to either stay consistent with the previous year’s sales or simply not do as poorly as other events. As one voter wrote on her ballot, Even our best shows were down in sales amounts from the previous year.
