Bring home gifts with regional flavor, such as Mohawk sweetgrass baskets, Old Order Amish quilts, wood carvings, handmade soaps and candles, and woven and braided rugs, local food products and books, and recordings about North County life.

Our gift shop and gallery, in the Historic District of downtown Potsdam, features art, crafts, music, and books by more than 150 regional artists, authors and musicians. Throughout the year we offer a wide range of classes-including jewelry making, silk dying, wood carving, drawing, painting, and beginning guitar for kids and adults. Join us for “Live Music Fridays” most Friday evenings, or stop by during one of our gallery receptions or arts gatherings. Winged Bull Studio, Clayton, Near Seaway Trail National Scenic BywayWinged Bull Studio, established in 1988, is the atelier of artist Greg Lago. An old cylinder proof press looming large against the back wall testifies to the role that printmaking plays in the studio. Lago’s works in wood and paper can be viewed as they are created. The atelier exhibits the works of other artists on a rotating gallery schedule.

Teaism, a café located in the studio’s backyard garden of herbs and flowers, serves gourmet, vegetarian fare. Made from scratch, often with home grown, organic ingredients, the dishes are served with fine teas, homemade lemonade, beer or wine.

Sunfeather Soaps, Potdam, Off Seaway Trail National Scenic BywaySince 1984, this soap factory has produced soaps and creams infused with fresh botanical and herbal ingredients. Although small, this bustling factory produces and ships 700 pounds of soap a day. We offer more than 140 products in our gift shop. Visit nearby Parishville Park for a great view of the St. Regis River. The Birchbark Bookstore, 3 miles away, is a haven for lovers of used books and Adirondack furniture.

Trinkets Art Gallery, Gouverneur, near Black River Trail Scenic BywayA multi-media artist for 38 years, Paula Towne has had her gallery in her Victorian home for 27 years. Here she exhibits her wood-burning and oil paintings, pen and inks, watercolors, political cartoons, portraits, architectural renderings, rag-bag rugs, and decorative furniture. The reading room of the Gouverneur Library features one of her many murals. Paula’s Art School in the renovated barn out back will be opening this summer.

These are meant to last, to age, and to gain in character. Revel in the texture of soft supple leather. Visitors often can see Tom at work in the small production area. Works in other media from some 30 craftspeople from across the region are also showcased.

That Stamp Store, Gouverneur, near Black River Trail Scenic BywaySurrounded by woods and fields, the small shop, with a barn in back, is stocked with hand-woven items including rag rugs in a range of sizes, mug mats, placemats, and runners. Anita, the owner, who began weaving in 1987, was taught by Eleanor Austin, one of the region’s traditional weaving masters. Also find materials perfect for scrapbook  makers.

The Frontenac variety of cold-hardy grapes is one of seven varieties currently grown at the vineyard.

The wood beams and walls of the original horse stable showcase pack baskets, antler baskets, and snowshoe baskets, woven by owner Yvonne, a self-taught artist. For more than two decades her customers have been captivated by her unusual basket shapes, materials, and sizes, inspired by nature. She has recently started selling antiques. While you’re in the area, also plan to visit North Country Artisans.

North Country Artisans, Natural Bridge, on Olympic Scenic BywayGrady, the laid back English Lab, is likely to welcome you to what was once this hamlet’s grocery store. Built in 1914 the shop still has the original wide plank floors, tin ceiling, and large front windows. Illuminated by natural light, one-of a-kind art, prints, stained glass, and wooden home accessories are all made by hand by the craftspeople who are inspired by their lives in the North Country. Also visit The Natural Basket and enjoy a bite to eat or ice cream at nearby Treats & ‘Tiques and the Natural Bridge Cafe.
