St. Lawrence River, Thousand Islands, Northwest Adirondacks
Learn about Mohawk Indian traditions and history at the Akwesasne Museum to the east of Massena (Rte. 37).
Enjoy a self-guided driving tour of 35 to 40 St. Lawrence County studios during the Annual Artists’ Studio Tour during the first weekend of November.
Enjoy a scenic view of the West Branch of the Oswegatchie River from a grassy picnic area in the center of Harrisville (Rte. 3).
Star Lake (Rte. 3) is a two-tier lake with rainbow, brown and lake trout as well as black bass and land-locked salmon.
The Five Ponds Wilderness Area, bordering the southern portion of Cranberry Lake, has a network of well-marked trails that give visitors easy access to some of the most pristine wilderness in New York State. The Oswegatchie River (Rte. 3) flows through the Wilderness area, providing great experiences for paddlers and anglers.
The Frederick Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg (Rte. 37) showcases the illustrations, paintings and bronzes of one of the world’s most famous artists.
Heritage Cheese House in Heuvelton (Rte. 812) uses milk provided by local Amish farmers to create award winning cheese and cheese curd. They also carry a wide variety of products and locally grown foods from the Amish community.
In Watertown the Black River, a white-water playground, courses through the city’s center, pinched between gorges. A kayaker’s delight and river raft guide’s thrill, the river ultimately empties into Lake Ontario in Dexter at Black River Bay. Families enjoy the Thompson Zoo in the city’s beautiful park designed in the mid 1870s by Frederick Law Olmsted, famed for his concept of Central Park in New York City. The park’s hilltop summit offers wonderful views of the region. Fort Drum, one of the largest military bases in the U.S., is on the outskirts of Watertown.
While in the area also plan to visit the Yellow Barn Winery, the Thousand Islands Winery, and the Otter Creek Winery - all members of the Thousand Islands - Seaway Wine Trail.
The Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, on Wellesley Island in the St. Lawrence River, is a 600 acre nature center located at Island State Park. The 8 miles of trails, 3500+ square foot natural history museum, and butterfly house are open July-August. In winter enjoy cross country skiing. Open all year. Accessible from the Thousand Islands International Bridge (Interstate 81 or Rte. 12).
Join the Art Architecture Tour in Clayton (Rte. 12) on June 26, and in Cape Vincent (Rte. 12E), admire Napoleon leading the parade of more than 50 units during the 40th Annual French Festival on July 12 and 13.
